Wednesday was the day of the big hike! We were joined by Mason Harris.
The morning was a little chilly so we all brought jackets, but it was perfect hiking weather.
The hike up is steep and basically straight uphill. We took a few breaks along the way, but it was a fun, upbeat crew.
The kids were in great spirits and had a great time, talking nearly the entire time.
The waterfalls on the way up were fun.
There was snow on a few places on the trail, and we had some fun playing in it and under it.
We made it all the way up to Emerald Lake, where we ate our lunch on the little island. The water was freezing cold, fed by "numb-butt glacier," which, of course, I told the kids all about sliding down. The peak sits right about Emerald Lake, about 2000 feet up!
We went a little further than Emerald Lake, into and out of the small hut, and toward the boulder field to overlook the other trail and to look toward the scree slope and the saddle.
One of the most spectacular parts of the hike was the huge fields of wildflowers leading up to Emerald Lake. There were lots of Indian paintbrush, purple, white, and yellow flowers.
The hike down was fast and pretty easy. We didn't get all the way to the top, and it wasn't always easy, but the kids were really happy and were proud to have made it past Emerald Lake.
