Otter Rock and the Devil's Punchbowl

Jim and Mel planned a list-minute trip to a condo that someone in their ward owns at Otter Rock and invited us to join - of course we said yes!

We started Saturday morning off with a nice run - straight up to Otter Crest's scenic viewpoint. It was a super steep climb! Fortunately, on an out-and-back run with a steep climb, that means a big, speedy downhill on the way back.

The rest of the day we spent on the beach. We started the day while the tide was out exploring tide pools, hiking a long ways up the beach. We went a long ways watching waves crash and exploring.

In the tide pools, the water was super clear and we saw lots of sea urchins, colorful purple starfish and hermit crabs.

This area of the Oregon coast was quite rugged and had cliffs in both directions, north and south. Our morning exploration took us north towards where we had run that morning, and our later exploration took us south.

There were sea lions out sunning on the edges of the tide pools.

We kept hiking down the beach until we got to a tall waterfall.

After our hike, we set up next to a little pool of water that had been left in the sand when the tide went out. We built sand castles, waded in (it was still cold!), and then waded into the ocean to play in the waves a little (Jim always talks Jared into going out further). We played some Spikeball as well.

Jim had recently gotten a trick kite and was flying it. It was fun to watch, and Jared got to try it, too. It could really pull you as it caught the wind. Then, another guy with a trick kite came and was also flying - and gave Jim a chance to fly his kite. It was bigger and more powerful, and the guy had fashioned a harness to put around yourself.

Our setup was near Devil's punchbowl, so we went in and explored. There were some interesting caverns in the areas surrounding that we could explore because the water was low. As the tide started to rise, these were some of the first places to get water.

By the time we left, the water level had risen quite a bit, and some areas required wading through some water. The Pacific Ocean is COLD!

Later that evening, we went back to see what it looked like at higher tide.

We had cookies and watched a super quality movie (Angry Birds).

Though we had planned on staying until Sunday, we decided to head back home Saturday night after the beautiful sunset! We were glad we did because by the time we were getting home, Liam was feeling sick (and not just car sick).

1st casualty of the trampoline

The most exciting delivery on Kate and Liam's birthday was the trampoline! Since we've set it up, the kids have been on it nonstop. Until one of them was no longer on it!

They were playing "dead man come alive," and someone didn't close the zipper, and Liam (who was the dead man with his eyes closed) tumbled out.

We called Lisa to ask if she had a butterfly bandage, and she excitedly came over with super glue.

We think Liam's scar looks kind of like Harry Potter's lightning bolt, which Liam loves.

Kate and Liam turn 6!

The official celebration of Kate and Liam's birthday took place back in Wilsonville.

The celebration dinner of choice was hamburgers and tater tots.

They wanted to have friends over to share in their cake and ice cream. We love living next door to "best friend Tate!"

Cincinnati Trip

The first step to a good trip is good preparation. 12 of these 14 bags were packed by Dani (with less complaining about disliking packing than Jared did while packing his 2 bags!). Step 2 is the loading puzzle, which Jared loves and thrives at!

Sunday was a nice day for some nice pictures out by the monument.

The cousins spend lots of time playing PacMan and Galaga trying to beat each other's records.

We spent one day at Kings Island. Jacob and the big cousins were thrilled to be able to ride the big rides, like the Beast!

The younger cousins spent their day in Snoopy Land, riding all the rides there.

It was a perfect day for all

topped off by KI's famous "blue ice cream."

One day, Nana brought out tons of bubbles for everyoen to play with

and there were bubbles EVERYWHERE!

Any time not spent at the pool was spent building train tracks, legos, or having battles in Nana's playroom.

Jared has been dying to try Tom & Chee, which was featured on Shark Tank a few years ago, so he could try one of their famous donut grilled cheese sandwiches. Their other grilled cheese sandwiches were quite good, and we shared a couple donut ones as a "dessert grilled cheese" (who knew there was such a thing?).

As with most summer trips to Nana's, most of the time is spent in the pool. This year, we gave Nana a new pool toy for her birthday - the Inflate-a-Bull! It was a challenge to get on, and provided lots of funny games!

We celebrated the 4th of July with sparklers in the backyard.

We celebrated Kate and Liam's birthday poolside with cake, ice cream, and presents.

Clayton had a trampoline mishap - he jumped off but landed a little funny on his arm. Jared and Taylor
diagnosed it as a dislocated elbow, and after some YouTube consultation, they put it back in place by Taylor pulling Clayton's wrist while Jared held Clayton's arm.

Kate couldn't wait for us to get home to put together her Beauty and the Beast castle!

After a fun 10 days, we loaded up to head home. We take up 2 half rows plus 1 seat.
